O-Ring resists all pressures
An effective O-ring joint requires forceful mechanical assembly that causes appreciable deformation. As long as the pressure of the contained fluid does not exceed the contact stress of the O-ring, a leak cannot occur. The gasket is designed to have a small contact surface between the O-ring and the parts being sealed: this allows for a high specific pressure on that surface, capable of containing significant pressure without damaging the O-ring body.
The flexible nature of the elastomer allows it to adapt to slight imperfections in the flatness of the parts being joined (especially at low pressures), but a significant reduction in the roughness of the metal surface at the sealing point is still required. Under very high pressures, both the flatness and roughness of the surfaces in contact with the O-ring are absolutely essential, but it should be noted that the contact surface required to have these characteristics is very limited.
